Lay summary
The present project provides a taxonomic revision of the former genus Notocactus on the basis of a synthesis of traditional (i.e., nomenclature, typification, synonymy, taxon description) and modern (i.e., DNA barcoding, species delimitation analyses, dissemination of knowledge through the internet) methods and conceptions. Results obtained so far indicate that the genus Notocactus as circumscribed by Buxbaum is not monophyletic. In contrast, it comprises up to six distinct lineages occuring in southern Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, and neighboring Argentina. Parodia subgen. Brasilicactus is cladistically basal and sister to a clade comprising Parodia subgen. Eriocactus and a subclade that includes all other lineages of the study taxon as well as three additional lineages of Parodia s.str. Notocactus s.str. consists of two distinct groups: (1) a clade of Parodia ottonis and relatives (including P. carambeiensis, P. linkii, and P. tenuicylindrica), and (2) a clade comprising all other species such as P. concinna, P. herteri, P. horstii, P. mammulosa, P. scopa, and P. werneri. So far we sequenced highly variable cpDNA markers for about 300 accessions from different populations. This data set is now used for delimitation analyses and phylogeographic investigations. In addition, we are working on resolving cumbersome issues in nomenclature and typification of the different species. The electronic information system is currently under development and will be available with information on collections, literature, and nomenclature in due time.
