Lay Summary (English)

Lay summary
A new electron microprobe laboratory is being built at the University ofBern for the BeNeFri Department of Earth Sciences. Funding from the Cantonof Bern and the Swiss NSF permit the purchase of a JEOL JXA-8200 tofulfill analytical requirements in geo-science research for theuniversities of Bern, Neuchâtel, and Fribourg. A broad range ofapplications - in fundamental and applied science projects - demandimproved performance which our previous instrument could not deliver. Thenew instrument notably offers much better X-ray imaging capabilities, greater speed in quantitative major element analysis of minerals (andother solid samples). Trace element analysis and chemical datingcapabilities will be improved as well, to complement our µXRF probe andmass spectrometric means of isotopic analysis available at the Instituteof Geological Sciences in Bern. The new electron microprobe lab shall openin March 2005.
