Lay summary
The white campion Silene latifolia is a dioecious plant with XY-sexdetermination. We analyze population structure and divergence of a set ofpopulations within the species native range. We investigate the occurrenceof multiple paternity and the variation in reproductive traits within andamong these geographically separated populations. For these aims we employmolecular markers. In greenhouse experiments, we experimentally manipulatethe intensity of pollen competition and investigate its effects on male,female and offspring fitness. We explore how genetic variation amongdonors and recipients affects the outcome of fertilization. Investigationof donor x recipient interactions within and among populations, as well asof the mechanisms involved, should help us understand the nature ofcoevolutionary processes between male and female function in a dioeciousplant.
