Lay summary
The researches were conducted and progressed as proposed, despite some significant reduction of original budget. Over 220 species were sampled from the entire distribution areas of the family Balsamiaceae. Five new species were found with one already published and the rest are being descrbed. Molecualr phylogenies were reconstructed for over 200 species based on four DNA markers, viz. ITS, trnL-F, atpB-rbcL, and the AP3/DEF K-domain. Molecular phylogenies confirmed that extant Impatiens species are of Southeast Asian origin, from where overland dispersals to other areas of the world have occurred. The Madagascan Impatiens shows an African origin. The molecular phylogenies also suggested that spurred flower with 4 lateral sepals, 3-colpate pollen, narrowly long fusiform fruit, and reticulate seedcoat represent the plesiomorphic states within Impatiens. Both x=8 and 10 might be the ancestral basic chromosome number in Balsaminaceae. The diverse and complicate specialization of floral structures of Balsaminaceae is pollinator-mediated, and therefore highly homoplasious. These results have enabled us a better understanding of biodiversity of this family itself, and can throw lights on the understanding of plant morphological evolution and historical biogeography across the paleotropical regions.
