Lay summary
In a prospective randomized multicenter trial, 400 asymptomatic diabetic patients without prior coronary artery disease are evaluated. All patients undergo baseline examinations and myocardial perfusion SPECT (MPS) for coronary artery disease evaluation. Patients with evidence of silent ischemia or in general silent coronary artery disease on MPS are either randomized to an optimized medical therapy or to an additional invasive/revascularization strategy. Patients are then followed-up. After1 and 2 years patients undergo several examinations to evaluate these 2 treatment strategies.
